Conducting Secure Online Olympiads at Scale

As global competitions shift online, ensuring fairness and maintaining exam integrity become more challenging, particularly when participants are located in various countries, using different devices, and in diverse environments.

In this interview, Anil Palletti, CEO and Co-founder of NRICHMINDS Technologies, discusses how the International Logic Olympiad effectively conducts large-scale online exams and highlights the importance of selecting the right proctoring solution.

An Interview with Anil Palletti

Quilgo: Can you introduce yourself and the International Logic Olympiad?

Anil: I am the CEO and Co-founder of NRICHMINDS Technologies, the organization behind the International Logic Olympiad. Our goal is to raise awareness of critical thinking and problem-solving skills among school students worldwide.

We work with students from grades 1 to 11, providing cognitive tools and competitive opportunities through the Olympiad. Since our participants are from all over the world, all our programs, including assessments, are conducted entirely online.

Quilgo: What challenges do organisations face when conducting large-scale online exams?

Anil: There are several key challenges.

First is maintaining the integrity of the exam itself. Next is the need for advanced proctoring. It is also essential to have reliable technology that can scale to accommodate a large number of participants.

Another challenge is managing the different devices, platforms, and access environments that participants may use. When operating globally, you cannot control the technology each participant relies on.

Quilgo: What were you seeking in an online exam solution?

Anil: We needed a solution that could effectively tackle all of our challenges: security, scalability, and reliability. Since this was our first global event, we needed a reliable system that would run smoothly without a complicated setup.

Quilgo: What sets Quilgo apart from other tools?

Anil: The responsiveness, communication, and overall support were crucial. When you're under time pressure, especially for something like the olympiad finals, you need a partner who is available and proactive. That made a significant difference for us. Additionally, the setup process was straightforward, allowing us to move quickly.

Quilgo: What features were the most valuable during your Olympiad?

Anil: The most important features were exam integrity, scalability, and reporting. Proctoring, particularly screen tracking, was critical to ensuring fairness for all participants, which is essential in a competitive environment. Additionally, the reporting features allowed us to monitor and review exam sessions effectively.

Quilgo: How did Quilgo support you during critical moments like your finals?

Anil: The support was excellent; they were very responsive throughout the process. It significantly reduced our stress and eliminated much of the manual effort involved. Honestly, we couldn’t have executed the event at this scale without Quilgo. They handled the most complex parts of the process for us.

Quilgo: How crucial was flexibility for your global event?

Anil: It was very crucial. When managing participants across different time zones and conditions, flexibility is essential, such as extending access or adjusting schedules. This made a significant difference for us.

Quilgo: How do you think about fairness, operational effort, and choosing the right technology for large-scale olympiads?

Anil: Fairness and integrity are absolutely at the core of what we do. Without them, the entire value of the competition is lost.

But ensuring that level of integrity at scale is not something you can realistically manage manually. It requires the right technology in place.

Quilgo made a significant difference for us by greatly reducing our operational effort. Honestly, we couldn’t have achieved this without it. It managed the most critical part of the process, which allowed us to concentrate on the competition itself.

Based on that experience, I wholeheartedly recommend it. If you’re organizing online Olympiads or high-stakes exams, my advice is simple: use Quilgo to save yourself a lot of hassle.
